Breakfast in the Classroom

Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC)

Update for 2023-24: Currently Beethoven implements breakfast at 7:30 - 8:05 am and snack at recess (10:10 am). Students may choose breakfast or snack, but not both on the same day. Starting October 2, 2023, breakfast service will be provided at recess for all students. Some classes may choose to pick up breakfast to eat in class but breakfast will be served early at 7:30 am.

Beethoven participates in Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) along with all other LAUSD schools. Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) provides breakfast at no charge to students in class. BIC replaces the regular breakfast times in which students eat in the cafeteria before school. Now with BIC students eat in the class, during instructional time. Students eat BIC at 8:10 am. Generally, the teacher, a volunteer parent, or students retrieve the BIC cart from the cafeteria. The cart consists of red and blue containers. The red container has cold food such as milk and fruit and the blue container has hot foods such as breakfast burritos.

Students are not required to eat BIC but are highly encouraged if they have not eaten breakfast already at home. Students who eat BIC must take all the items offered. If they do not want one or more items, these foods are placed on a community table and other students may eat them. Perishable BIC foods may not be saved for recess or breaks due to possible food temperature issues.

Teachers take accountability for who ate BIC and send the cart along with the roster back to the cafeteria area. Our wonderful cafeteria staff packs BIC every morning for every classroom and empties the containers once they are brought back to the cafeteria.

What if my child is late to school?

If your child is late to school for any other reason, they will not be able to have BIC. We can not hold BIC for tardy students.

If I do not want my child to eat BIC, can we arrive at 8:20 am?

No, school starts at 8:10 a.m. for all students whether or not you participate in BIC. BIC is during the instructional time so there will be activities that your child can take part in during BIC.

How do I get ahold of the BIC menu?

The monthly BIC and lunch menu for Beethoven can be viewed by clicking here.

How long does BIC take?

Generally, BIC takes between 10-15 minutes.

What happens to the food that is not eaten?

Full meals are sent back to the cafeteria for students who declined a meal. Students who took a full meal but did not want a particular item and placed it on the community table, so that food may be eaten by another student. Any food left on the community table after BIC will be disposed as food can not sit out due to temperature requirements.

How much is BIC?

BIC is free for all students.

Do you need volunteers to assist with BIC?

Yes, classrooms can benefit from volunteers, especially in the primary grades TK - 1st to help with opening packages and clean up. Please speak to your child's teacher.

Can students save non-perishable food for a snack at recess?

Yes, fruit and other non-perishable food can be saved for a snack at recess.

If a child is lactose intolerant, is there lactose-free milk?
