Beethoven Students are Mathtastic!

Math Standards

At Beethoven Elementary, math instruction is based on the Common Core Standards in Mathematics. Math concepts are taught using a variety of materials. The standards-based instruction incorporates manipulatives, intervention materials and technology. Our math instruction also incorporates the 8 mathematical standards, shown on the left, to ensure students are using key strategies to solve and apply their math skills.

Cognitively Guided Instruction

Additionally, in 2016 Beethoven decided to adopt a methodology already used by some staff members called CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction). As a Cotsen alumni school, several Beethoven teachers are well versed in the methodology of CGI. As a whole staff we are being trained by UCLA Mathematics Project on CGI.

CGI focuses on developing a student's authentic way of solving math problems. CGI is based on more than 30 years of research and one of his founders is Megan Franke, a professor at UCLA. CGI emphasizes conceptual development that encourages students to become independent problem solvers and critical thinkers.

ST Math (TK - 2nd)

One of math adaptive programs used on our iPads is STMath which stands for Spatical Temporal Math. STMath is developed by MIND Research, the leader in visual math instruction. ST Math is a game-based instructional software for K-12 and is designed  to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning.

ST Math incorporates the latest research in learning and the brain and promotes mastery-based learning and mathematical understanding. The ST Math software games use interactive, graphically-rick animations that visually represent mathematical concepts to improve conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.

Oh and don't forget about the beloved Jiji! Jiji is the penguin in the ST Math software games that children must help get past obstacles by solving math puzzles. Every time a child demonstrates understanding of a math concept, Jiji crosses the screen, signaling success and leading the student to the next more challenging puzzle.

ScootPad (3rd - 5th)

Another math adaptive program used in the upper grades on the iPads or on the Chromebook laptops is ScootPad. The math program is a comprehensive, adaptive curriculum for grades K-8 with engaging instruction, formative assessments, simulated high-stakes tests and automated interventions designed to improve overall mastery in math.
